FAQs

When are emergency escapes required in a basement?

    • A basement with 'habitable space' and/or sleeping room is required to have emergency escape.
    • When a basement has more than one sleeping room an emergency escape is required in each sleeping room, but is not required in adjoining areas.
    • Emergency escapes must be operational from the inside without the use of a key or other tools.
    • Window wells deeper than 44 inches must have a permanently affixed ladder or steps.
  • How high does the window and well have to be? 
    • Windows must have a sill height not to exceed 44 inches above the floor.
    • Emergency escape openings with a finished sill height below grade is required to have a window well unit.
    • Window well base area must have a minimum area of 9 square feet.

  • How big does the window have to be?
    • The minimum required area is 5.7 square feet.
    • Minimum open window height required is 24 inches.
    • Minimum open window width required is 20 inches.

What kind of mess is involved in installation of a basement egress?

    • We do out best to protect your property although we cannot be responsible for any damage due to the weight of our equipment.
    • We use plywood to protect your lawn and plastic tents to protect your interior where cutting is being done and canvas tarps to protect your floors.
    • Our goal is for you to not even know we were there.

Will I need a building permit?

    • Building permits and inspections are needed for almost every project. 
    • We will be more than happy to obtain a building permit for you.
    • We will also schedule and be there for any inspections that may be required in your township or boro.

What do you mean by multi-unit discount?

    • Building codes may require more than one egress in your basement, discount applies to additional systems. 
    • If your neighbor gets a system installed at the same time a discount will be applied to both contracts.
    • Builders installing multiple units in the same development get a multi-unit discount.
